It aims to bring together industrial and academic experts in safety and reliability, focusing particularly around core areas of expertise and industrial needs, in energy (oil and gas, renewables, nuclear), aerospace, and defence in particular. The Programme Committee will be led by Lesley Walls (Strathclyde), while the meeting will have three co-chairs – Terje Aven (ESRA), Richard Denning (SaRS) and Tim Bedford (Strathclyde).

Jacqueline Christodoulou, Safety and Reliability Society’s Chief Executive Officer said, ‘This as a major opportunity for everyone involved in safety and reliability to come together at an international conference where cutting edge research meets industry innovation. The last ESREL conference held in the UK in 2000 forged partnerships on all levels that have lasted – we hope that ESREL 2016 will provide an opportunity for industry, academia and professional institutes to meet and network to the benefit of all.
Key dates:
  • Abstract submission deadline 1st February 2016
  • Abstract notification 15th February 2016
  • Paper submission 4th April 2016
  • Paper notification 30th April 2016

The Safety 2016 World Conference will be held in Tampere, Finland on September 18-21 2016.
Abstract submission for the 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, Safety 2016, is open from 1 May to 1 November 2015.

Since its first edition hosted in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989, these World Conferences have served as the key biennial gathering of violence and injury prevention experts and scientists.

Safety 2016 will be held against the backdrop of the newly defined post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, which are currently set to address related issues, including road safety and violence prevention. These issues are of great relevance to all countries, but in particular those of the developing world, which are actively seeking solutions to these challenges.
Among the conference topics are e.g. Arctic safety; Consumer safety, product safety, tourism and services; Environmental safety (built and other); Fire safety and burn injuries; Occupational safety; Preparedness and resilience (e.g. disaster, mass causalities, civil protection); Safe communities; Safety culture; Safety management (e.g. risk management); Strategies, legislation, action plans, policies; Technology – solutions and applications for safety; and Transport safety (e.g. pedestrians and vehicles).

Co-sponsored by the World Health Organization, under the theme "From research to implementation", Safety 2016 seeks to underscore the need to bridge violence and injury prevention research on the one hand and policy and practice on the other.

The International Organizing Committee and the national hosts are committed to making Safety 2016 a great success.

Healthy Workplaces Campaign

April 01, 2016
Healthy Workplaces Campaign coming soon...

Healthy Workplaces Campaign

The Healthy Workplaces Campaign is wrapping up nearly two years of promoting the importance of managing psychosocial risks and stress in workplaces across Europe. Over this time much has been done to raise awareness, thanks in a large part to the dedicated efforts of more than 30 National Focal Points and their networks, over 100 Official Campaign Partners, and 34 Media Partners.

According to EU-OSHA Director Dr Christa Sedlatschek, ‘It is now abundantly clear that stress can hit any of us, at any time, over our working lives regardless of age, or sex, or status. The good news is that the campaign has comprehensively shown that stress can be beaten. My hope now is that we recognise stress as something unacceptable and that we feel empowered to tackle it together.

Director Sedlatschek was speaking to a group of over 300 delegates who gathered at the Healthy Workplaces Summit last month in Bilbao, Spain to mark the close of the campaign. Among them were occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals, decision makers, policy advisors, representatives of employers and trade unions, and others. It was a unique opportunity to reflect on the successes of the campaign, lessons learned, to exchange good practice and foster discussion on managing stress and psychosocial risks in workplaces, especially putting research into practice.

Brokerage Event - Circular Economy and Standardization

January 15, 2016
Partnering for Horizon 2020 calls

Brokerage Event - Circular Economy and Standardization:
Partnering for Horizon 2020 calls

The objectives of this event are to present the European Union’s new Work Programme 2016 – 2017 of the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation “Horizon 2020” and to prepare future cooperation actions between participants.

This current move towards a “circular economy” has been identified as a significant opportunity to develop business and to contribute to a resource-efficient and low-carbon economy. However some important barriers still limit this transition towards a circular economy: one of them is the lack of harmonized standards. Another one is that standardization is felt more as a brake than as a lever for economic activities.

The corresponding calls are “12 – Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials” and "17 - cross-cutting activities (focus area) - Industry 2020 in the Circular Economy" that will be “at the heart of how H2020 contributes to sustainably boosting economic growth and renewing Europe's industrial capacities in a world of finite resources”.

The event will focus on the links that exist between standardization actions and the implementation of a more circular economy, and on demonstrating how standardization can be used as a booster for R&D and for economy.

The following aspects will be investigated during pre-arranged meetings:

The contribution of standardization to the circular economy or how to make progress on the consumer or legal authorities confidence on sustainable products, design, consumption, raw materials versus recycled materials, new business models, etc.

1.       The applicability and use of recycled/secondary materials/waste status exit (reliable and comparable information, measurement, metrology)

2.       Stocks and flows in waste management and recycling : identification, classification and quantification, consistency of data regarding raw materials

3.       Common understanding through agreed terminology, share the vocabulary and definitions in order to have an agreed and consistent approach

4.       Promote interoperability and comparability with other materials

5.       Trade of second-hand goods and spare parts

Milestones :

-          pre-registration : by end of November

-          in-line Workshop reflexions via fora on electronic platform from 2nd November 2015

-          meeting 15th January 2016, in the form of a plenary session and three workshops

Who can participate?

Companies R&D Staff, Trade associations, Research laboratories, Universities and research organizations, Scientific institutions, Project coordinators, Project partners looking for a coordinator, Project partners proposing competences, Companies/SMEs, , Associations

Why to participate ?

-          To make the link in between the various drivers of a successful move towards a more circular economy: market opportunities, policy and regulation, technical innovation and standardization,

-          To get the latest information from the European Commission about Horizon 2020 next calls,

-          To present, discuss and develop new project ideas and to facilitate the setup of project consortia: participants will have the opportunity to present their project ideas or competences during thematic workshops.

Safe and Healthy Workplaces: a precondition for well-being, growth and competitiveness in Europe

January 12, 2016
Breakfast discussion about “Safe and Healthy Workplaces: a precondition for well-being, growth and competitiveness in Europe”

Safe and Healthy Workplaces: a precondition for well-being, growth and competitiveness in Europe

the Partnership for European Research in Occupational Safety and Health (PEROSH), the European Forum of Insurance against Accidents at Work and Occupational Diseases and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) cordially invite you to a breakfast discussion about “Safe and Healthy Workplaces: a precondition for well-being, growth and competitiveness in Europe”

on Tuesday, 12 January 2016, at 8:00 am

at the European Parliament

Members Restaurant Salon, ground floor, rue Wiertz 60, 1047 Brussels

Employment in a healthy and safe working environment is not only beneficial for the individual employee but also for employers and insurers and therefore enhances the European economy. Employers with high occupational safety and health standards tend to be more successful and profit from lower sickness absence rates of their employees. Furthermore, occupational safety and health prevention measures contribute to the sustainability of social insurance systems as the reduction of work-related accidents and diseases avoids further medical and rehabilitation expenses.

ESIP and PEROSH as well as the EU-OSHA and the European Forum of the insurance against accidents at work and occupational diseases being active in the field of occupational safety and health at European level have published several positions on this issue. In this breakfast event we would be happy to discuss important future research and policy priorities as well as best practices to minimise occupational accidents and work-related hazards with experts and decision makers in the field.

8th International Conference Safety of Industrial Automated Systems (SIAS 2015)

November 18, 2015

The 8th International Conference Safety of Industrial Automated Systems (SIAS 2015) will take place in Königswinter (Germany) on November 18-20, 2015.

The 8th International Conference Safety of Industrial Automated Systems (SIAS 2015) will take place in Königswinter (Germany) on November 18-20, 2015.

SIAS has a long tradition. It was first organised in Montreal in 1999. In the meantime, events in Bonn, Nancy, Chicago, Tokyo, Tampere and Montreal again marked milestones in the follow-up of the initial gathering. SIAS has become a steady appointment for OSH experts, players in industry and the public sector. Nowadays, while technological developments are continuing by leaps and bounds, the conference has grown all the more important: It is a forum to share proven safety solutions, identify emerging OSH risks in good time and discuss chances and drawbacks of technology advances on a regular basis.

In 2015 the Institut für Arbeitsschutz der Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung (IFA) in Germany will be the conference host for the second time in the history of SIAS. After a successful event in Bonn on the Rhine at the beginning of the millennium, the conference will now move upstream to Königswinter at the foot of the Siebengebirge. The romantic landscape together with the approaching Advent season and the renowned German Christmas markets will set a perfect framework for fruitful and inspiring exchanges.

Conference topics

  • Safety of machinery
  • Innovation and the future
  • Risk assessment
  • Practical applications and experience
  • Training
  • Safety equipment and systems
  • Safety-related control systems
  • International standardization
  • Functional safety

SCAFFOLD delivers reports and tools
for occupational nanosafety in construction

Scaffold is an EU-funded research project which aims at providing a set of practical, robust, cost effective and easy-to-use guidance documents and tools to improve safety at work for the construction sector dealing with Manufactured Nanoparticles. This includes aspects of prevention and protection, exposure measurement, risk assessment and risk management as well as training.

The Scaffold website www.scaffold.eu-vri.eu serves as central point for information and provides public access to a large number of results developed within the project and to relevant material from other resources.

20 public Scaffold reports are available already now and can be downloaded here. The Scaffold toolkit will be published by the end of this month and the Scaffold integrated handbook by the end of this year.

An overview of the project achievements is provided in the Results Summary and (more in detail) in the Final Newsletter.

On April 15, 2015 Scaffold organized a joint workshop with NanoMicex and SanoWork on "Operational occupational Risk Management Models and tools for MNMs in the industry". The agenda, presentations and summary of the panel discussion can be found here.

The Scaffold research has received funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement number 280535.

European Week for Safety and Health at Work: let’s work together to manage stress!

The 2015 European Week for Safety and Health at Work, a highlight of the ‘Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress Campaign’, starts on 19 October. Events will be held across Europe to mark the occasion and put stress and psychosocial risks in the workplace in the spotlight. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and its network of partners aim to get Europe talking about how we can tackle these risks together.

EU-OSHA’s network of national focal points is hosting numerous events in more than 30 countries to highlight the campaign messages. Topics include stress and psychosocial risk in relation to working hours, a new protocol dealing with bullying and harassment, evaluation of psychosocial risks in small companies or the relationship between occupational safety and health (OSH) institutions, the educational sector and companies in the management of psychosocial risks. Conferences presenting activities implemented during the two years of the campaign are scheduled in Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Spain and Sweden.

EU-OSHA’s official campaign partners are also planning activities: The European Work Hazards Network (EWHN), for example, will hold a closing event in Italy to discuss experiences and best practices from Italy and how to prevent, assess and tackle the risk at European level; German OSH services provider B-A-D will host a conference on the risk assessment of mental workloads, while the Federation of European Ergonomics Societies (FEES) will dedicate its European Month of Ergonomics to the ‘ergonomics for managing work-related stress.’ The focus will be on the workplace, in particular workplace design, risk assessments and interventions, and interpersonal matters like bullying or harassment.

This year’s European Week continues with the theme – Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress – and also highlights two particular issues: sexual harassment and third party violence, for which two new infographics have been produced. The first explains what constitutes sexual harassment, the number of workers affected and what measures companies can implement to deal with the issue. The second describes third party violence – the most prevalent psychosocial risk for European enterprises – who it affects most, occupations at risk and its effects on workers.

Dr Christa Sedlatschek, Director of EU-OSHA explains that: ‘Although violence can potentially affect any workplace and any worker, certain work characteristics increase the risks. Working face-to-face with clients, customers or others outside the organisation increases the risk of violent incidents, also known as ‘third party violence’. ESENER-2 shows that having to deal with difficult customers, patients, pupils were identified as the most prevalent risk factor of all in European enterprises (57.4%).’

Other results from the ESENER-2 survey show that 76 % of establishments in the EU-28 carry out regular risk assessments, and of those 90 % consider them a useful way of managing safety and health. High levels of employee participation (whether formal or informal) was shown to be a strong indicator of good quality of work, including the quality of OSH management in general and psychosocial risk management in particular.

Shortly after the European Week, on 3 and 4 November 2015 the Healthy Workplaces Summit 2015 will take place in Bilbao, Spain. Leading European experts and decision makers will discuss the final results of the two-year campaign, strategies and programmes for managing stress and psychosocial risk at work as well as the future of occupational safety and health in Europe. The event will be held in memory of Dr Eusebio Rial González, former Head of Prevention and Research Unit at EU-OSHA with the announcement of the Eusebio Rial González Innovation and Practice Award in Occupational Health Psychology.
